That could broke your hardware. You can' t be sure that all the pins of
the IDE cable are connected at the same time, also there could be static
currents and ground problems...

Anyway usually I remove my ZIP drive from the parallel port without
shutdown the machine but I do that on my own risk and I will never try to
do that with my HD (at least now that I have only one ;-).
