Are you by any chance connected via a SLIP or PPP link to the net? If
so, check whether you're set up for software or hardware handshaking,
and if software handshaking is in use, you're probably getting hit by
XOFF characters in the files in question...

Alternatively, ask the admins of the sites in question whether they're
using software or hardware handshaking...but in that case, nobody
could download the files from their systems...
