Soundblaster Mic not working...

I've got everything working with the Soundblaster AWE64 (PnP) -- except
the microphone. I tried a simple program that reads from /dev/dsp and
then writes back to it. Nothing happened except low volume noise.

/dev/snstat reports everything working, and reading the mixer settings
shows that the volume on the mic is set to 17% (default?), which should
pick up something -- right?

writing data to /dev/dsp seems to work. All other functions of the sound
card seem to work, including Audio CD playback, AWE synth, etc. What else
can I check or test? Let me know if other information is needed to debug
this problem.
