2.1.102/alpha hangs on serial access

I attempt to access /dev/cua0 or /dev/ttyS0 and immediately, the system
hangs -- only the reset button unjams it. I get no Oops or other visible
symptom. The machine is hung.

Alpha PC164
AIC7xxx SCSI card
DE450 ethernet,
3c509 ethernet

I can send along my config if needed. Serial support is configured as
a module. kmod works fine in general (cdrom and floppy support are modules.)

Any chance that 103 fixes the problem?
