I'm still trying to work out how to get round the problems introduced by its
demise. When the sound modules get loaded, there is about a two-second burst of
extremely loud noise before the mixer levels are reset to the levels they had
last time the module was unloaded.

This isn't particularly acceptable, and although I could work round it by
setting defaults in the source code, that's not a possibility for a large
number of users.

At one point, I had the sound modules calling kerneld to save and restore the
mixer levels, so it was done automatically when the module was loaded and
unloaded, with no blips in the levels at all. The previous levels were loaded
before initialising the hardware at all.

Now, however, I've got no clue how to sort it out.
