I was able to find the problem when viewing the world from
VGER, and putting verbose logging at its smtp sender.

In certain peculiar operation mode called "CHUNKING" Samba's
MTA "crashes" the connection. Now VGER won't use that
transmission mode, until Samba's MTA becomes upgraded to
version where reception of "CHUNKING" is corrected.

In fact I am rather surprised you get ANYTHING thru.
The problem I saw should be a rather complete "all works,
or nothing works" case.
