will this work without /proc mounted ?
name translation isn't working in 2.1, and varlink could be a great
replacement. but it must be possible to make /etc/inittab a varlink
(e.g. to /etc/GENERIC/inittab.${hostname} (this would be
/proc/varlink/etc/GENERIC/inittab.${hostname} ?)).
