2.1.99: PS/2 keyboard/mouse woes

I have a PS/2 keyboard and mouse, and 2.1.99 gives me "keyboard timeout"
messges at boot up and refuses to recognize keyboard input thereafter
(i.e., at login).

Kim Lundgren had the same problem with 2.1.99pre-3. Anyone know what's
wrong, or what I could do to troubleshoot it?
