/dev/cua, /dev/ttyS (2.1.91)

I'm having the same problem occasionally. When modem is symlinked to
ttyS1, it sometimes waits and waits without doing anything (guess I could
had started a strace :| ) no matter how many times I try, but If I symlink
it back to cua, it works perfect.
