Max number of virtual domains

This may not be the proper place to ask about this, but is there any
reasonable limit on the number of virtual domains other then the default
limit of 256? I know of upping that via echoing a higher # to the proc
file, but is there a point in which the kernel/linux starts losing
connectivity?
