Yes, that's the problem. The actual idea of putting the smarts in the
CPU instead of the printer really ain't bad.

I use an HP 5L driven by GhostScript as my printer at home. It speaks
PCL, which is a documented protocol, but it's really quite
over-featured for what I really use. Even from my Windoze box I print
(via SAMBA) PostScript to the GhostScript renderer (using the generic
PS driver from Adobe) because it gives me better output quality...
