/proc

Greetings:

I recently migrated from Slackware to RH5 and my system
is g2g with one exception. The proc "filesystem" gets
mounted before fstab is processed and I rcv an error
saying /proc already mounted. However, when I invoke
mount, it is not shown. Also, when I tail messages while
invoking a ppp link, pppd echos /proc filesystem not mounted.
The "tree" exists under the /proc directory and I can
cat /proc/<whatever>. I combed the initialization scripts
and commented-out the applicable mount statement. However,
proc still gets mounted. Invoking run level 1 is the only
way I can manually (u)mount /proc. I prefer mount proc
via fstab but unable to find "what" is responsible
for doing it during boot.

Please forward a solution/description.
