I need to slow down IDE accesses for a Toshiba notebook with unknown PCI/IDE chipset
(`hdparm -p N /dev/hda' says `function not implemented' for generic 2.0.33).
the hard disk seems to be somehow damaged and will lockup the system
after some seconds of sustained access with hd LED _on_.
the notebook worked _rock_solid_ for months until yesterday, with no software
change or whatsoever; trying to boot clean kernel from FD or CD won' help either.
I'd like to slow down hd access to be able to run a backup or copy the disk in Linux
because right now Win95 still runs fine, but here the hd LED is always only flickering
and has ~0.5 pauses after every few seconds even when running `scandisk' or similar,
while in Linux the LED is solid _on_ for sequential hd accesses (even when only
reading 512 bytes per read which still gives 3 MB/sec; this is a IBM DLGA-23080 disk).
`hdparm /dev/hda' shows all parameters being 0 (zero) except for `readahead' which is 8.
lowering readahead to 1 won't help, the system still locks up within seconds :-(
any idea how to access/copy this disk ?
