Parallel printing problems

I've got a box running 2.1.91 that is exhibiting duplicate characters when
printing to an HPLJ6P.

This printer has been working fine for over a year (I've been doing regular
upgrades on the kernel with no problems).

The printer is on a 50ft special (i.e. BlackBox) parallel cable. I put the
printer on a 10ft 1284-certified cable and the duplicates got worse (as in
EVERY character was printed twice). On the longer cable it was only a few
random characters.

The /proc info:
base: 0x378
irq: 7
dma: none
modes: SPP,ECP,ECPPS2

I've got two identical machines and the other one is (no printers on this
one):
base: 0x378
irq: none
dma: none
modes: SPP,PS2,EPP

I'll get a chance this weekend to test this out more but I think I may have
changed the BIOS settings on the machine with the printer to the
SPP,ECP,ECPPS2 setting (trying to get the 1284 probe working). Could this
cause duplicate characters? Could this be a problem with the parallel port
driver?
