There are already chipsets that emulate text mode (incidentally the uni compsoc
actually got a prehistoric dual board 8bit 768x1024 paperwhite card thats
1980's and does this).

Thats one reason for getting fbcon support working for some SVGA cards as
well as giving the option to run consoles without the 512 symbols displayable
limitation.

Another one is so you can set a linear 1024x768x16bit or similar mode
in the bootstrap and drop fbcon/X over it for supporting cards from annoying
little people like Neotragic who wont provide chipset docs.
