I remember trying to mke2fs a 9 gig ext2 drive- I ran out of memory-
and this was on a 64mb box :)

What version of e2fsprogs were you using? That doesn't make any
sense.... I know I've run mke2fs a 54 gig raid array on a 32 meg
laptop (using a PCMCIA bus toaster SCSI adaptor hooked up to a 19" rack
that was quite a bit larger than the laptop :-).

mke2fs shouldn't require much memory at all, even for big disks.
