I think kermit works - as long as the first thing you do after the set
line is a set carrier_watch off. If you attemt to start sending/receiving
on the port kermit will block.

For as long as I've tried it, kermit works just fine with the /dev/ttyS
devices, going back a couple of years. My version of kermit doesn't
recognize "set carrier_watch" command, and hasn't needed it.
