bdflush paramters for a laptop

Can somebody explain (or point me to a summary) how the various bdflush
paramters work in linux 2.0? I'd like to change the settings so the drive
would spin up less often on a notebook. For example, I'd like for it to
maintain all updates in memory for several minutes (10-30) and then flush
them all.
