It's maybe me but I think there's a problem with 'make config' in
2.0.33 (and 2.1.x as well, afaik) concerning the support for 53c8xx chips.
It offers 53c7,8xx and thus 53c8xx, however it proved unable to find my
tekram 390F. Since I know the kernel supports it, I investigated further and
found it in Documentation/Configure.help.
Unfortunately it's not written that 'make config' will offer support
via the BSD driver only and only if you answer no to the 53c7,8xx driver.
Maybe it could be stated in 'make config' or in Configure.help ...
