FS Corruption on SCSI Zip (2.1.88)

Yesterday after spending 2.5 hours downloading the sources to xf86 3.3.2
to a zip disk I did a "ls" to check all was there, instead of getting a
nice directory listing I ended up with a kernel panic:

Kernel panic: EXT2-fs panic (device 08:04): ext_2_read_inode: unable to
read i-node block inode=16385, block=65541

and this totally killed my Linux box. I could still switch between vts
but there was no response to any other input. Three fingers didn't
reboot my box and I had to resort to a hard reset. When I got my system
back up e2fsck-ing the disk couldn't report/solve the problem. I could
still mount the disk but again "ls" made Linux die.

Messages in syslog:
Mar 10 16:13:43 spook kernel: scsi0: MEDIUM ERROR on channel 0, id 5,
lun 0, CDB: Request sense 00 00 10 00
Mar 10 16:13:43 spook kernel: Current error sd08:04: sense key medium error
Mar 10 16:13:43 spook kernel: Additional sense indicates Unrecovered read error
Mar 10 16:13:43 spook kernel: scsidisk I/O error: dev 08:04, sector
7234, absolute sector 7266

Repeated several times with sector and absolute sector increasing each
time. (I think messages from trying to e2fsck the disk) Anyhow I
managed to make a new fs on the disk, doing e2fsck doesn't do anything
and the disk mounts and reads OK again. Any how if this info is of any
use to any one there you go, (or is this just noise?)

James

BTW tonight I'll be getting xf86 all over again much to my phone
company's delight!
