2.1.87 problems

Helli all,
I'm having problems with the 2.1.87 kernel. Compiled with SMP (err, i forgot to
rip it off from Makefile) it completly booted but hanged something like 20
minutes after under X, and compiled UP it doesn't even boot. After 20 lines or
so of init, it dumps junk chars on screen and reboot. My machine is a 225mmx
with 64 edo ram, 3.8g quantum ide hd. The last kernel I used was 2.1.81 and it
stood without any problem. If anyone has a clue ....
