Camm,

Suggest a modem interface problem. While I wrote the original modem
driver, it has been hacked in cruel ways by others. There is nothing
unusual in the configuration; I've used very similar configurations
here on Sunses. Do note, on an Digital Unix 4.0 Alpha, evil things
happen when using reference clocks and the debug switches. Digital
thinks you never should run a console disconnected from an eyeball.
I don't know if Linux has that perp; even so, it shouldn't paralyze
the silicon.
