oops.
a short overview:

running redhat 4.0, kernel 2.0.33. tried to mount /dev/cdrom (hdc);
the cd drive was open, and i pressed ^z as it was closing. didn't stop
the job, instead it hung for about fifteen seconds and then
segfaulted. i have a goldstar atapi cd-rom and a cyrix 6x86 cpu.

after the segfault things started to sound worrying; i couldn't log in
on a tty (kernel: unable to load interpreter), nor through xdm
(password incorrect - pam going down?). this lasted for a couple of
minutes, after which everything was fine, except that mount
subsequently thought that my cdrom drive was busy or mounted, although
mtab and /proc/mounts contradicted this. xplaycd was able to start and
stop audio cds, and the eject was not locked.

having tried to repeat the situation, everything works ok. so perhaps
it has something to do with what happened immediately prior: hotjava
browser v1.0 started to fork uncontrollably, causing much grinding,
but eventually being settled by init. my ppp connection was lost
as a result of me switching off the modem during the worst of it.

i don't follow the mailing list, so i would appreciate it if any
further queries you might have could be sent to me personally.

yours,
hamish allan

ps if anyone has the time or inclination to explain to me how init can
disable processes 1 and 2, and yet linux not go down, i would love to
hear it. what's process 4?
