kernel 2.1.79 inop on alpha PC164

I can get this kernel to ompile, but it won't run. MILO loads it but when
it tries to run it I get kicked immediately back to MILO. I'm wondering
if I have known-buggy compiler or assembler.

Is anyone running a development kernel on similar equipment?

I'm using RedHat 5.0,
