Looks like 's' is used for SunOS-like partitions (8 slots per disk)
while 'p' is used for DOS-like partitions (4 slots per disk, with
possible extended partitions. So Solaris/x86 seems to support bith
types of partition tables - same as Linux. The different letter
marks a different interpretation mode for partition tables.

BTW, would it be possible to build and use 'hybrid' partition tables
that way ? We're now using DOS disks the boot sector of which has
been patched to look like a valid Sun disk label, so they would
appear in both schemes. (Of course, not all slots contain valid
entries for the partition type and or size.)
