modprobe: can't locate module

I'm getting some weird console messages with 2.1.79 and 2.1.80pre2.
Everytime I make an outgoing telnet, ssh, or irc connection, I get a
"modprobe: can't load module" message. It doesn't give any reference
to the module it's trying to load and can't find. I didn't notice this
behavior prior to 2.1.79 and the behavior is the same with modutils
2.1.55 and 2.1.71. Any ideas?
