I guess my point is that you need to know about host IDs, targets, LUNs
and slices for any naming scheme of this kind to make sense. If you do
know about those, remembering which digit does what is straightforward
by looking at the abbreviation letters. At least compared to remembering
it based on position only. If you don't know the English words, you
would be no worse off - and you might be able to pick native words that
match the letters, or invent some other scheme for remembering it.
But I agree with those that point to other Unices, the most compelling
reason is that since they use this naming scheme, we would want to use
it other, at least as long as there's no pressing reason not to.
