Having just replaced my, now creaky, P120 with
a K6-200, I'm unable to boot Linux. My initial
experimentations with RAM timings, etc, had no
luck, but I have been able to get things up (and
seemingly stable) at 166Mhz. Have I been sold
a duff CPU?
Box: K6-200 (now @166 :( ), 430HX mobo, 64Meg EDO
RAM, some other random stuff...
I've tried various kernels:
2.1.78 - no cigar
2.0.33 - ditto
2.0.33 compiled for 386 - still no luck
I believe that the K6 bug affects only systems with
>32meg installed, so I've tried all of the above with
mem=32M. Should that be enough, or should I find some
old SIMMs, and try with only 32M installed? Also, is
the bug fixed in stepping 2 anyway?
The RAM seems OK (well, it has run for > 6 months on
a P120), but should certainly be rock solid at the
timings I've tried (70ns with maximal wait states, etc).
