Error in "make xconfig" for 2.1.78

While happily selecting my options, I got to the sound config and
it gives me this:

Error: syntax error in expression
"($CONFIG_SOUND != 0) && ($CONFIG_LOWLEVEL_SOUND == 1)
&& ($(null) == 1 || $(null) == 2)"
