After a protracted battle, I've hacked knfsd into operational status on
the Alpha platform. The problems were all related to header file
conflicts between the kernel and glibc.

Turns out that glibc defines dev_t as unsigned long, while the kernel
(mostly) regards it as unsigned int. On alpha these are not the same
size, creating a big problem with the syscall interface in exportfs.
Being built against glibc, it has an incorrect notion of the "opaque"
structures that get passed to the kernel nfsd.

Thanks to Phillip Blundell's advice, I chopped out a minimal set of
headers from the 2.1.76 kernel and created a private typedef for their
dev_t fields. Using this in the construction of the knfsd utilities did
the trick.

Attached are an (ugly) set of patches if anyone wants to play with this.
I'm probably not going to take this work any further, as Olaf keeps
promising to polish and re-release the utility package. Also, I suspect
that some of my solutions to the namespace problem were not done The Right
Way(tm).

I did see a patch at cmu.edu which purports to fix knfs under glibc, but
have not tried it. At a brief glance it appears not to deal with the type
size problems.
