Unless you need to configure or alias modules, there's no need for one.

Also, once upon a time, somebody named it /etc/modules.conf; that
filename is also checked, for backwards compatibility. Personally,
I like it better than conf.modules because it puts the "file type"
last where it belongs, but that's a digression.

They work quite well, especially with kerneld, though sound in the
latest development kernels needs much documentation between 2.1.75 and
2.2.0...
