can't boot 2.1.76 when mounting /dev/md0 as root

I can boot with 2.1.74 no problem, not 2.1.75 or 2.1.75. Using initrd, I
mount root on a raid0. I have 9 disks in the raid, it appears that at the
ninth disk md_add() thinks that the device has zero size. Almost like
there is a define that is set to 8. In md.h, I have set MAX_REAL to 16
and MAX_MD_DEV to 8 (which in the past was sufficient). The 2.1.75 and
2.1.76 kernels are built from trees derived via patches from a working
2.1.74 tree. BTW, I'm using NCR875 scsi controllers.
