Why no ext2 "no_atime" option?

Linux 2.0.32 includes support for ignoring atime updates, a big win on
news servers.

Looking through the source, it appears there is no mount option to
enable no_atime support under ext2. Why is this? Is ext2 no_atime
unstable?

ext2 no_atime support is present, but it requires the setting of an ext2
flag "EXT2_FL_NOATIME", which is not manipulated or set in the kernel at
all.

Request: Add a noatime mount option to the ext2 fs in the next kernel
release. I can easily work up a patch to do so if desired.
