Okay, i'll start it off. I have a smc card that uses the dec 21041
chipset. The w95 machine is just a intel etherexpress 16, all setup a-ok.

On with the show..

tulip.c:v0.86B 11/14/97 becker@cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov
eth0: Digital DC21041 Tulip at 0x7c80, 21041 mode, 00 00 c0 99 72 d3, IRQ 12.
eth0:21041 Media information at 30, default media 0800 (Autosense).
eth0: 21041 media #0, 10baseT.
eth0: 21041 media #4, 10baseT-FD.

I use v0.86B, and that's the snippity snip of my bootup.

The topography of my network is the easiest possible...
LINUX MACHINE = 198.162.0.50
WIN95 MACHINE = 198.162.0.100

I dont have a hub, and I bought a good quality crossover cable.

I start up my ifconfig w/..
ifconfig eth0 198.162.0.50 pointopoint 198.162.0.100 up

Which, at this time, the network lights go "Woowoo! HI there!" and they
turn green.

and then I do my routing w/..
route add 198.162.0.100 eth0

Everything should work right now, correct? Nope, I guess not. Look at
this.

root@dSC:/digital# ping 198.162.0.100 -c 25
PING 198.162.0.100 (198.162.0.100): 56 data bytes
--- 198.162.0.100 ping statistics ---
25 packets transmitted, 0 packets received, 100% packet loss

Which kinda made me curious. So, I ran tcpdump -i eth0
and... viola.. I got these results

root@dSC:~# tcpdump -i eth0
tcpdump: listening on eth0
10:31:39.887117 arp who-has 198.162.0.100 tell 198.162.0.50

Which leads me to my final conclusion. What the heck is going on, and what
is the next step to getting my mini-lan going here ;)

Thanks for your time all,
