I hate to bring this up again, just when this thread had died...

I'm a CS grad student/compiler hacker, looking for a substantial thesis.

It was mentioned before that the biggest hurdle for linux/merced would be
compiler technology; all the hp/intel dialog suggests the same.

Is there anyone already working on vliw extensions to gcc? Is there any
hope I'd be able to get enough useful information about IA64 strategies to
begin work on gcc/merced (or gcc/generic-vliw, to be extended toward
gcc/merced when full technical specs are out)?

Compiler questions, for those that know: How flexible is the gcc backend?
Is the machine-description language used by gcc able to describe something
like merced?

Advice, guidance, enthusiasm and/or discouragement welcome.
