I get this exact same error message when I tested the patch last
night. I can type in the console that this message appears in, but any
other virtual console is unresponsive. My only option was to hit the
reset button.

I did not try it while in X.

I forgot to do this! I will try it again this evening, and then
do a memory dump too.

My system:

P133 64M ram
SCSI (Adaptec 2940)
Slackware 3.0, hand upgraded everything to current
gcc2.7.2.3
libc5.4.38
all requirements for 2.1.X met as far as system tools, etc
