I too solved the same problem. Look in ftp.picturel.com/pub/source/pcistat.tgz.
My patch removed /proc/pci and created /proc/pcibus. This solved a few
other problems as well.

However, it was met with a luke-warm reception.

I still don't thing /proc/pci needs to exist at all, by all means take a peek
at my work.

There is the Linux Kernel Configuration Manager
<http://zen.btc.uwe.ac.uk/linux/cmgr/> which is intended to solve a larger
problem, but it is also a larger chunk of source.
