You could look into compressing the kernel with the bzip2 algorithm
instead of the current gzip algorithm. On a vanilla 2.1.61 kernel (make
oldconfig) I get the following results: (this doesn't include the exploder
code).

vmlinux-massaged 1002452
vmlinux-massaged.bz2 447189 (bzip2 -9)
vmlinux-massaged.gz 470063 (gzip -9)
