Kernel compile problems

I'm trying to update from Kernel Ver 1.2.13 in Red Hat 3.0.3 to Kernel
Ver 2.0.30, without any success.

In the compiling stage of "make zImage" I get:
dnsdomainname: host name lookup failure

In the linking stage I get:
Warning: cannot find symbol _start;
In function memcpy, undefined reference to input_data & input_len

Anybody care to offer advice please?
