Lilo problem w/2.1.51

Running stock 2.1.51
one HD on primary IDE chain, one on secondary.

After upgrading to 2.1.51, I compiled a patched version, and tried running
lilo (v19)

Device 0x0300: Invalid partition table, 1st entry
3D address: 1/1/0 (53)
Linear address: 40/0/0 (39)

Is what I get. It does not change, as far as I can tell.
