Just thought of something else, at the time of lockup I was typing away on
the PS/2 keyboard and my cat jumped on the main laptop keyboard. I
just remembered there being a race in the tty driver so that could quite
possibly be what I hit...I'd test it more but I can never get PCMCIA
compiled correctly to use any other kernels.
