I have had identical problem with AIC-7880 Ultra SCSI and 2.0.30 SMP kernel.
It was cured by pre-patch-31-1. You my try to apply
http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/davem/pre-patch-2.0.31-2.gz
on top of clean 2.0.30 and test it. It works for me.
