Parport: the struggle continues

With the 2.1.47 kernel -- if I try something like

bash# echo 'Hi there' > /dev/lp0

the shell seems to block, and typing a Control-C yields

kfree_s: Bad obj 00000000

What's going on here? The parport_pc module was loaded with the
usual arguments io=0x378 irq=7. The relevant parts of the .config file are

# CONFIG_PNP is not set

CONFIG_PRINTER=m
# CONFIG_PRINTER_READBACK is not set
