You might want to take a look at zlibc (sorry don't have the URL handy but
its on sunsite I think)
It won't work for executable files and for some things could do better (eg
can't compress pine's folders) but all in all is a good solution.

Sometimes full disk is exatly what you want, but yes they are two diffrent
applications.
