something is definitely wrong with your patch. I just did the following:
tar -xzf linux-2.0.30.tar.gz
patch -p0 <pre-patch-2.0.31-2.gz
patch -p0 <werner17Jul.patch
and got exactly the messages I mailed to you earlier today.
