At the pace development takes place, the effort would be quickly snowed
under with patches. Instead of having documentation on older kernels it
might be wiser to have something akin to a specification. Of course, that
moves beyond documentation and into project management -- but having a
document stating how things 'should' work instead of how things did once
work would be useful. It would certainly help efforts to port to other
architectures and even keeping track of the evolution of the system.
