patch-2.3 or Postcards from the edge

Just a quick note - avoid GNU patch-2.3 like the plague.

I downloaded and compiled it on June 17. I thought I was going nuts,
imagining things (it always used to work after all). I noticed that
patch-2.3 couldn't handle patching non-existant files (ie. creating
files). I suffered with it, thinking it must be me 'cause a million
people use patch and releasing it with a major bug is unthinkable.

I see that patch-2.4 is out now (June 22). Someone else must have
noticed too. Guess I'm (mostly) sane after all :-)
