[2.1.42 vs pre-2.1.44-3] Ride the Fader - time trials!

I had a quick and dirty, hack and slash inode/dcache time trial this afternoon.

The machine:
AMD K6-200 on an ASUS P/I-P55CT2P4 - 512k cache (beta BIOS 2.04-7)
32MB EDO 60ns mem.
/dev/hda = IBM DeskStar 1.6GB EIDE (a cruiser!)
/dev/hdb = Maxtor 7120 AT (from a junk pile, only works as slave)
/dev/hdc = Shitgrate ST5660A (pardon my french, but I don't like )
(Seagate IDE drives much at all )
The command:
Boot
Logon as root
cd /
/usr/bin/time /bin/ls -Ral

The file systems:
Filesystem 1024-blocks Used Available Capacity Mounted on
/dev/hda2 794408 712024 41360 95% /
/dev/hda1 820256 790960 29296 96% /dos
/dev/hdc1 265928 241568 24360 91% /dos2
/dev/hdb1 126886 123792 3094 98% /dos3
/dev/hdc2 244947 200742 31555 86% /redhat

Interesting note about this. My main Linux partition (hda2) has
4KB block sizes (can't remember why I did it that way.. years ago).
It's a bastardized severely hacked Slackware of old.

The new redhat 4.2 partition (which I made 1KB block sizes for ext2)
blows the pants off my old 4KB partition.. speed-wise. And believe me,
this is an *old* drive compared to a super-tweaked Mode 4 DMA monster.

I'm thinking the 4K to 1K conversion in the kernel is adding a bit
of overhead to it, or something. Not sure what is up with that. Turning off
DMA on the new drive just makes it slower.. so I can't blame that on it.
If I remove /dev/hdb, no difference.. shouldn't, since the HX chipset is tunable
per drive.

The result:
pre-2.1.44-3:
6.49user 29.61system 1:58.02elapsed 30%CPU (0avgtext+0avgdata 0maxresident)k
0inputs+0outputs (0major+0minor)pagefaults 0swaps

2.1.42:
6.71user 43.10system 2:13.49elapsed 37%CPU (0avgtext+0avgdata 0maxresident)k
0inputs+0outputs (0major+0minor)pagefaults 0swaps

I forsee myself installing RedHat on /dev/hda real soon, with 1k blocks.
