You have to patch by hand. I'm using pre-2.0.31-2 with the buffer code
from 2.0.29 and Linus' bugfix to buffer.c from 2.1.39. It works quite
stable on about 30 machines here.

If you need the new buffer code, there's about a dozen of patches to
choose from.
