The standard answer is "you need swap".

I now have more memory than physical memory + swap in other systems.

Doing the same types of things I don't see a reason for swap.

SunOS systems (and earlier bsd) forced you to have swap >= physical
memory size (even if they didn't use swap). This just made things
easier for the kernel writers.

But I'm pointing to a much more serious problem...the hangups without
swap...

This was not a question "how much swap do I need", this is reporting a problem
in both 2.0.30 and 2.1.43.
